posted by Jordan on 2008/4/23 (Comics)I've always wondered just where these little starting supplies come from when a character takes a new class in the middle of a campaign, especially for people like Wizards, since they get their trusty spellbook at level 1. I mean, if the characters are in-town or something, then it's fine, but what if they're stuck inside some horrible dungeon? Does the Character Class Fairy bring them this stuff in their sleep?

Considering the whole mess of being able to just choose any new character class, I'd say the suddenly appearing spellbook is the easiest part to believe.

Actually, in this sort of case (becoming a Wizard), whenever someone takes their first level, the cosmic ripples given off by the event break open the roof of the tunnel currently inhabited by the character, resulting in the corpse of a long dead wizard dropping from a hidden wizard. The character can then retrieve the necessary items from his skeleton. If the current situation does not allow for this, it is instead retroactively assumed to have happened during one of the boring bits, much in the same way the character would have gained the knowledge to become a Wizard in the first place.
